My Work Philosophy

What is my role and work philosophy?

I am a trauma-informed conscious birth doula, helping families like yours and single mothers to have the best birth experience possible.

Thinking and working holistically means I provide support that looks at the whole person and considers your physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing. I give you my full individual attention. In fact, I prefer to have only one or at most 2 clients at the same time. Oh! How I like to pamper you and make you feel good!

We will get to know each other on a very deep level so I can fully understand your desires and fears, be your advocate so you can have your birth your way, and work together in an environment of mutual trust.

You will receive many tools to help you feel empowered. You will learn exercises to relieve common pregnancy symptoms, the best positions during childbirth, nutrition, and everything about the physiology of childbirth so that you feel confident in yourself and your abilities.

I will help you connect with your body and your emotions in a deeper way so that you can calm your fears and stay fully  present to bring more ease to your birth experience.

You will discover that you have a super power! I’ll teach you how to use your superpower during birth, then continue to use it into motherhood.

If you wish, you can opt to receive Gentle Bio-energetics and Reiki to support and restore the energy of you and your baby from pregnancy to childbirth to postpartum.

People often confuse the figure of the doula with that of the midwife or ask me if it is a new profession.

The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek, meaning “Woman’s servant.” Doulas have been at women’s sides as long as midwives. Traditionally only the midwife, a helper and the mother would have been present at birth. Doulas were the women-helpers; women of age who had been-there-done-that, they were old enough to understand the work being done.

These women were always there to give massage or apply a cool washcloth, help in and out of positions to labor in, fetch the midwife’s tools or herbs, give emotional support and encouragement, and give tips.

Her role was and is to create a calm and safe environment and expertly soothe and support the birthing mother.

For Your Own Wellness

What is the passion that drives me in doing what I do?

Do you know that usually One third of mothers has a traumatic birth experience and 1 in 8 mothers enters parenthood with PTSD? and 30% of men have postpartum depression?

Think at the present situation in the world. Now we live in this isolation time where women feel alone during birth, pregnancy and after. This definitely affect the health of women and the baby. A research from 2018 says that:

“Maternal loneliness showed associations with dissatisfaction with life and the pair relationship, and with the presence of depressive symptoms. The mother’s prenatal loneliness predicted the child’s internalizing problems in adolescence.
Interventions aimed at relieving loneliness should be provided for mothers at all stages of motherhood.” (*)

If this was true in 2018, imagine now, in this period, how much the mental health of mother and child can be affected.

I want to be part of the solution, I want to support you, help you not feel so alone, and prevent postpartum depression as much as possible and offer the possibility of a positive and easier birth experience.

Continuous support during labour may improve outcomes for women and infants, including:

  • increased:
    • spontaneous vaginal birth,
    • shorter duration of labour,
  • decreased:
    • caesarean birth,
    • instrumental vaginal birth,
    • use of any analgesia,
    • use of regional analgesia,
    • low five-minute Apgar score
    • negative feelings about birth experiences

and there is no evidence of harms.

Postnatal Support Network

The first 40 days are the most delicate and difficult.
I am expatriate from Italy to Norway. I am the mother of a son born in Italy and a daughter born here in Oslo. I had two different experiences in post-natal support. In Italy I had my family and friends and I had no one here. Despite the support received in Italy, I felt very lonely anyway.

Positive Birth Movement – Oslo

The Positive Birth Movement is a grass roots movement, spreading positivity about childbirth via a global network of free Positive Birth groups, linked up by social media.

We believe that every woman deserves a positive birth!

What does positive birth mean to you?
By that we mean that…

  • Women are where they want to be
  • Choices are informed by reality not fear
  • Mothers are empowered and enriched
  • Memories are warm and proud

Our movement exists because, at a global level, many women are not currently having a positive birth. We hold the birth experience to be of fundamental importance, to mothers, to fathers, to babies, to families and to society. We wish to change birth for the better.

Our aim is to:

  • Challenge the culture of negativity and fear that exists around birth
  • Share positive birth experiences
  • Share information about choices and rights in childbirth
  • Encourage women to raise their expectations of childbirth

And we will do this by:

  • Establishing a network of free to attend positive birth groups
  • Linking all groups together via social media to build a global network of shared expertise, power and positivity
  • Working together to challenge the culture of fear that surrounds birth
  • Empowering women to approach birth differently

We currently meet on the last Wednesday of each month at the Baker Hansen in Storo Storsenter from 10:30 to 12:00.

You are welcome to join us in the FB group.

Sometimes I fail to organize the meeting because of my doula work. Please, always check if the group meets on the established day by visiting our event page or register to our newsletters to keep you updated on upcoming events.

You can also contact me here, by email.

I hope to meet many of you.
Warmly,
Tamara
